South Rim Fire at Black Canyon of the Gunnison – Ongoing Containment Efforts
Gunnison County, CO (July 10 – present) — A lightning strike on July 10 ignited the South Rim Fire along the south rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. The blaze rapidly grew, scorching over 4,000 acres of rugged terrain and prompting closure and evacuation of the park.
- As of July 16, the fire had consumed approximately 4,160 acres and remained 0% contained.
- Fire managers warned containment could take until August 10, given the steep terrain, mixed fuels, and conditions conducive to spreading.
- Over 300 personnel, supported by aircraft including helicopters and airtankers, heavy equipment, and extensive ground crews, have been engaged in structure protection, fire line construction, and water/retardant drop.
Crews focus on safeguarding key infrastructure such as vaults near East Portal Road, Crystal Dam, and power lines, establishing contingency lines using dozers, hand crews, and hose lay systems.
The incident represents a significant multi-agency response: National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control, and other local fire districts, including SAFPD, have joined forces.
In line with interstate and mutual-aid commitments, the South Arkansas Fire Protection District dispatched a wildland crew equipped with a Type 6 engine to support suppression efforts on the fire’s perimeter. The engine crew assisted with initial attack, structure defense, and fire line holding operations, working alongside other local and federal resources.
